ENG/IMS 407, Interactive Business Communication, Spring 2012
This new course will focus on the question, How are interactive technologies, social media, virtual workspaces, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google +, etc., changing business communication? Students will conduct research on this question, but will also produce business communication using interactive and digital technologies. Students will gain knowledge and experience with digital correspondence; personal marketing; social media communications (blogging, tweeting, facebooking); virtual meetings and conferences; online presentations; data visualization and visual reporting; writing in virtual teams and virtual work spaces; digital networking; proposal writing; and international, global, and cross-cultural communication. Students will maintain a blog throughout the course and develop their own business communication eportfolio using interactive media. ENG/IMS 507 will be taught fully online during the Spring 2012 semester, using WordPress, Niikha, and a synchronous conferencing application (probably Big Blue Button). Glenn Platt is co-Director of AIMS and a Professor of Marketing. He received his Bachelor of Arts (with departmental honors) from University of Florida and his MS and PhD from Carnegie Mellon University, graduating in 1993.
He is currently the C. Michael Armstrong Chair in Interactive Media and has been Director of the Interactive Media Studies Program (and AIMS) since 2000. Glenn is President Emeritus of the International Digital Media and Arts Association. Glenn, along with his colleague Prof. Lage, coined the phrase “inverted classroom” with a 2000 seminal work outlining the benefits of using technology to move active learning into the classroom and lecture outside of class. He has won the School of Business Teaching Effectiveness Award, the Associated Student Government Effective Educator Award, and the University’s Knox Award for Teaching.
Besides directing AIMS, Glenn teaches Social Media Marketing, Internet/Digital Marketing, and the IMS/AI capstone consulting course. He consults in areas of Social Media, Internet Marketing and eCommerce.
